Is Technology Destroying Empathy?

The definition of empathy is being able to understand and share other peoples feelings.  Technology is destroying this personal human contact and communication.  All of these technological advances today impact our society greatly.  Our world revolves around technology, and some people do not know any better than to rely on it.  Children today are being handed phones and other electronic devices earlier and earlier each year.  They do not know any better than to use the technology.  It is intimidating that some young children are more advanced then adults when coming to technology.  Technology has ruined the way we think, learn, and act.  I believe technology has had more of a negative impact on us humans today, rather than a positive one.  Without human to human contact and conversation, no one can get a true understanding of how someone is feeling.  A text can be misleading.  Even I have experienced reading a text message one way when the person sending the message meant it to mean a completely different thing.  Even without hearing someones tone of voice or seeing their facial expressions, effects how people get messages or feelings across.

The Negative Side of Technology

During the earlier decades, technology was used to create medicine, new transportation systems and machinery, trying to find a sustainable way to live. Now a days, we live in such a high tech world, we have lost all our basic skills. "More than a third of children under the age of two use mobile media. That number only increases as children age, with 95% of teens 12-17 spending time online" (DeLoach, 2015). Because children are introduced with this type of technology at such a young age, they don't know any better. It can effect the way kids think, leading them to be easily distracted from the more important tasks at hand. This generation is so used to communicating through via text, online, or social media apps, there is now a lack of social interaction. Physical contact is lessening, and kids are found hiding behind their phones to build up the confidence they would never have in person. This also can lead to one of the number one issues we face daily; cyber bullying. Social media is an outlet that normally only glorifies someone else's life and never shows the negatives. This gives the common viewers a false reality that they feed into wishing they had the same. Unfortunately the quality time people once spent with each other is slowly loosing its purpose. Whatever is on your phone, clearly shows it is more important than the person or people you are with. This can emotionally affect someone, especially in an intimate relationship, friendship, or family member. Times are changing, and so are basic social skills. We are now missing out on the life around us, and are being sucked into the world of technology.

Empathy in Technology

I think technology has a negative impact on society, and is hurting the empathy in the world. Technology should be more of a positive, because it helps make communicating so much easier. Unfortunately, most people use it to avoid talking to others, and leads to less human contact, which humans still want. Technology has ultimately caused more issues, like in relationships, friendships, and other types of groups of people, because they will hide behind their phones and say whatever they want, but not face to face. Therefore, less communication, less human interaction, and more issues in society all point to technology being a negative, and hurting any empathy left in the world.

Technology is good and also bad for society which people don't realize, we need technology to survive and strive as well as communicate with the rest of the world.  Technology blocks human communication to an extent, but technology also makes us smarter. If we use technology right and don't abuse it, than we can find oursleves eager to learn. Now kids don't even want to go to class because they have the internet to just be their source of educational guidance.  A human must learn the fundamentals and skills of the world from another human. Technology should only be used by mature minds, ones than won't have to rely on a cell phone to get everything they need in life. Bottom line i don't think technology is killing our society i just think were doing a bad job of containing it.  

Empathy in Technology

Technology should used as a revolutionary form of communication, making all of our lives better. However, it does the opposite. Technology hurts society because it takes away the personable and human contact. People bece distant from one another and rarely talk in person anymore. No one cares about maintaining relationships because they can just hide behind their phone screen or social media account. When people are put in tough situations, they don't know how to react anymore because they are used to communicating through social media. Technology is killing all the empathy that is left in the world.

Abe Lincoln

Abraham Lincoln was the sixteenth president of the United States, and served as a lawyer before he came to office. He did some pretty big things in his presidency such as issue the emancipation proclamation, which was the process of freeing Americas slaves. This proclamation eventually led to the end of slavery as a whole. The thirteenth amendment is what finally put an end to slavery as a whole, but it could not have been done without President Lincoln. Unfortunately Lincoln was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth. Nevertheless, President Lincoln did some pretty amazing things for this country.

Benjamin Franklin

Benjamin Franklin was born in January 1706.  He had nine siblings, and was best known as one of the Founding Fathers who drafted the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution of the United States.  Franklin also consulted the 1783 treaty of Paris, ending the Revolutionary War.  At the age of 12, he would help his brother, a printer, sell their products in the streets, but he did not write his own. He knew his brother would not want him doing that, so at age 15 he snuck his letters under doors at night.  After 16 secret letters, Franklin eventually confessed he was the secret author.  His brother was jealous because Benjamin's writings were so good and he was getting all the attention.  Franklin's printing business was at an all time high in the 1730s and 1740s.  A few years following, he began making inventions still around and useful today.  For example, he invented a heat-efficient stove, and electricity.
